What happens at GrEAT Sports?

IMG_7165.JPG

GrEAT Sports introduces a new sport every three weeks through term, allowing participants to gain a good introduction to the sport, develop new skills, put these into practice and keep active.

As well as our talented Session Leaders, we often invite local professional instructors in to lead our sessions, benefiting from expert coaching and strong relationships with them and their local clubs. Keeping it varied, we’ve had everything from hockey, football and tennis, to martial arts, archery and zumba!

After signing everyone in and collecting the £6 subs, we begin with a quick warm up to get everyone going, led by our Sports Coordinator. We then launch into a variety of activities in a particular sport, gradually building them up so that everyone has the chance to get involved. At our over-18 sessions we aim to encourage independence, with volunteers there to provide support where needed.

I like GrEAT Sports because I can do lots of different sports and can meet all my friends. It is fun and ‘happy-feeling’.
— Tom, GrEAT Session Leader

What are the benefits?

Activities at GrEAT Sports promote co-ordination, concentration, mobility, body awareness and fitness. Participants have the opportunity to learn new skills and have fun in a relaxed, supportive and non-competitive environment, just as their peers would.

These effects can have huge positive changes in health, quality of life and self-esteem, promoting new friendships, access to further opportunities  and a sense of accomplishment.
